I'll post some tour news there, but it'll be a much more personal place than my last blog.  If you don't want to hear my opinions on art, music, politics, sexuality, fashion, and social justice, you'll probably want to stay here.  I won't be offended.


I'm going to New York in March!  There'll be a banjo workshop at Jalopy on March 19th, and a concert after that you won't want to miss.  I have a hot band to play the Superfine brunch (in Dumbo) the next day, and I'll be playing a concert in Asbury Park the next night.

, just so y'all don't think I've fallen off the face of the earth:


I'm spending some time at home in east Tennessee, doing lots of audio work.  I'm restoring and mastering field recordings for the Friends of the Cumberland Trail, which is starting a digital record label to release the music of local traditional musicians.

I'll be calling the square dances at the Hoppin' John Festival, Sept. 17-18, and the Roan Mountain Hilltoppers will be my dance band on Saturday!

I'll also be calling dances on Oct. 9th, at the Mabry-Hazen House. Christa Decicco from Christabel & the Johns is putting together a night of local food and social dancing that's sure to be a Knoxville hit.

On Oct. 22-23rd, I'm doing a mini-tour with the Jake Leg Stompers.  We'll be live on WDVX's Blue Plate Special Oct. 22nd, then off to Asheville for a night at Jack of the Wood.  We have a private house concert in Knoxville the 23rd.

Fall's a coming, so sweep out your hearths and darn your wool stockings - see you on the road!

I've been asked to tour with Michelle Shocked, as both opening act and backing band! We'll be in the northeastern US in early May, and the dates have been posted on my website and MySpace.

I'll be bringing a fantastic backing band, including fiddler Marian Macrae (the Macrae Sisters), and guitar monster Wes Langlois (Nashville's best kept secret.)

We'd like to fill some holes between May 10-14, (without Michelle) so let us know if you'd like to book a hardworking oldtime string band!

Next stop was just down the icy winding road to Eggleston, for a concert at the Palisades Restaurant. Sabra Guzman & Anna Roberts-Gevalt opened the show.


Tragically, us unsporting musicians were totally oblivious to this thing called "Superbowl Sunday..." attendance was limited. We have since been educated in the ways of the gridiron, and would like to say, "Who Dat?"


The DC show had to be cancelled; Mother Nature seemed pretty adamant on that point, as She dumped 18,000,000 tons of snow in our path. So Chance is home in West Virginia for a few days, and I'm here in Eggleston, a few miles south, talking about TV shows with Anna, checking out Sabra's graphic design, and watching D'Angelo videos with Joebass:

Chance & I have been dodging the weather, and it's really nice to be somewhere that only has rain to complain about!

 


We were in Asheville Thursday night, playing the Farmer's Ball. Dire storm predictions scared many folks into staying or going home, but in the end, we had a nice dance, I called a few squares, and we only got sleeted on a little. I'm glad the Bryson Gym has finally been rebuilt, after the roof caved in a while back. I did get socked in the face by a loose mic, and had to call one dance with a mouthful of blood, but I'm pretty sure I'll live.

 


Last night, we played live on WDVX, from the Knoxville visitor's center, with Ferd Moyse from the Hackensaw Boys hosting. These First Friday radio shows will be a regular thing from now on, and I'll be co-hosting the next one, in March!

 


We moseyed down the street to play for a big party at Yee-Haw Letterpress after that. If you haven't seen Yee-Haw's work, check them out:
